In early March 2023, the Lalji Foundation made a lasting impact on the Kahama community by hosting a transformative eye camp at the district hospital. This event was a collaborative effort with Lions International, Rotary Clubs and Majey Smart Vision.
The camp’s location at the Kahama district hospital was chosen to ensure accessibility for local residents, providing a centralized hub for care and education.
Here is what we managed to achieve over the course of five days of camp:
- Over the course of five days, a dedicated team of volunteers and medical professionals worked tirelessly, screening more than 3,500 people. This crucial first step provided essential access to care that many in the community would otherwise not receive.
- The most profound achievement was restoring sight to 348 individuals through life-changing cataract surgeries. For these men and women, the surgeries didn’t just correct their vision; they allowed them to return to work, reconnect with their families, and regain their independence.
- Beyond the surgeries, the camp provided a vital resource by offering free eyeglasses, each one carefully measured and tailored to the patient’s specific needs.
- A key component of the camp was also the educational outreach, which empowered residents with practical knowledge on maintaining long-term eye health and protecting their vision from common ailments
The Lalji Foundation’s commitment to healthcare doesn’t stop here, as the foundation continues to evaluate the positive ripple effects of this life-changing camp. The success of this initiative serves as a powerful model for future projects, demonstrating the foundation’s unwavering dedication to creating lasting, positive change in communities across the region.
