LALJI FOUNDATION, in collaboration with the Iqbal Esmail Family, launched the Mdimni Borewell Project in Mdimni Village, Mkuranga District, Pwani Region, Tanzania. The project was implemented in August 2025 and officially handed over on 11 September 2025. Its primary aim was to provide reliable access to clean water that is safe for households, schools, and local institutions.
Before this intervention, the community relied on unsafe and distant water sources, leading to frequent waterborne illnesses and placing a heavy burden on women and children who were responsible for fetching water.
Objectives of the Borewell Project:
- To provide a safe and reliable water supply for households, schools, and local institutions.
- To reduce waterborne diseases by replacing unsafe sources with clean water.
- To support schools with adequate water for sanitation and learning environments.
- To relieve women and children from long distances to fetch water, freeing time for education and economic activities.
- To support small-scale farming, livestock, and businesses with consistent water access.
- To reduce environmental pressure on unsafe water sources such as rivers and ponds.
The initiative’s success and visibility, amplified through media coverage on IBN TV and social media platforms, have highlighted the importance of clean water access for community development and inspired further engagement in rural water projects. LALJI FOUNDATION plans to continue expanding borewell projects across other villages in Tanzania.
