New Borewell Project Supports Health and Livelihoods in Mjini Kiuyu

LALJI FOUNDATION, in partnership with Lions Clubs Dar es Salaam , implemented a borewell project in Mjini Kiuyu Village, Wete District, Northern Pemba Region. The initiative was undertaken to address the long-standing challenge of access to clean and safe water faced by residents of the community.

The newly installed borewell now provides a reliable source of clean and safe water within the village, benefiting approximately 1,300 residents and significantly improving daily life in the community.

Objectives of the project:

  • Providing reliable access to clean and safe drinking water for households in Mjini Kiuyu Village.
  • Reducing dependence on unsafe or distant water sources that pose health risks.
  • Improving hygiene and sanitation while helping reduce waterborne diseases.
  • Supporting livelihoods by enabling water access for small-scale farming and household activities.
  • Reducing the time and effort spent by women and children fetching water, allowing more time for education and economic activities.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, Mr. Imtiaz Lalji, Chairman of LALJI FOUNDATION, emphasized that access to clean and safe water is a fundamental human need and a key driver of community development. Mr. Mohsin Bharwani, Coordinator for Lions Clubs Dar es Salaam, also highlighted the importance of partnerships in delivering sustainable solutions that improve the lives of underserved communities.

The project was welcomed by local leaders and residents of Mjini Kiuyu Village, who expressed appreciation for the initiative and its positive impact on health, livelihoods, and daily life. The borewell now stands as an important step toward strengthening community well-being and long-term development in Northern Pemba.
