Clean and Safe Water Opens a New Chapter for Makuyu

On 26th April 2026, LALJI FOUNDATION handed over the Makuyu Shallow Well project in Mvomero District, Morogoro Region. The Foundation implemented this initiative to improve access to clean and safe water for the community. In particular, it focused on women and children who previously walked long distances to fetch water from unsafe sources. As a result, the project directly addressed a critical daily challenge in the village.

Objectives of the project:

  • Providing access to clean and safe water for households in Makuyu Village.
  • Reducing the incidence of waterborne diseases caused by unsafe water sources.
  • Reducing the time and physical burden of collecting water.
  • Improving hygiene and sanitation practices within the community.
  • Supporting socio-economic development through improved water access.

Speaking during the handover event, representatives of LALJI FOUNDATION reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to supporting development projects in areas with the greatest need. In addition, Mr Imtiaz Lalji, Chairman of the Foundation, emphasized that clean and safe water remains a foundation for community health and development. Furthermore, the Makuyu Village Chairman expressed gratitude to the Foundation and donors. He highlighted that the shallow well would improve daily life and ease the burden on residents.

The project benefited 1,200 community members. As a result, access to clean and safe water improved significantly. In addition, hygiene and sanitation practices strengthened across households. The project also reduced the burden on women and children, allowing children more time for school and learning. Furthermore, it supported small-scale farming and other income-generating activities within the village.
